How To Make A Curriculum

Louise Said:

Making a curriculum map in my education class and I need major help!?

We Answered:

Look at the curriculum that you are using. We use Scott Foresman reading series, and they have all of the standards written out for you. Even if your curriculum doesn't have the stadards, you can look them up and get what is close to what you are using.

Dwayne Said:

how much attention to employers/grad school pay to college curriculum?

We Answered:

I would honestly say it would definitely depend on what field you are going into. For example, say you want to get a graduate degree in accounting. Those accounting firms would expect to have some type of work experience along with passing the exam called the CPA (Certified Public Accounting), and which the CPA exam will assume you know the necessary subjects to pass i.e. accounting, finance, algebra, etc. All in all, having the background knowledge to apply to the job is a valuable experience and yes they do look at that as well.

How do I make a homeschool curriculum?

We Answered:

There are so many choices, styles etc that it is hard to narrow it down without know more. IE do you want a complete curriculum in a box, do you want scripted lessons, weekly lesson plans etc or do you want to pull together an eclectic mix?

For a boxed curriculum I really like Oak Meadow

However personally I'm not a huge fan of boxed curriculum.

I suggest that you first look into learning styles and try to figure out how your child learns. Then you need to looked into curriculum methods.

I really like a Charlotte Mason/literature based program, however I find that if you use it for all subjects you end up with too much reading and not enough hands on. Therefore I mix styles depending on the subject.

I use a literature based Ameline approach for History and I incorporate geography into that too. We cover history, literature, composition, vocabulary and geography all in one. My preference for this is History Odyssey http://www.pandiapress.com/history_odyss…

Science I like to keep hands on. Depending on the subject I use a combination of

and various hands on kits I pick up at The School Box, Scholastic Book sales etc.

For math I really like

Spelling, phonics are reading took a lot of trial and error before finding good fits

Overall I would suggest Hook on Phonics if your child still needs help with that, then I feel one should move into a spelling program that woulds off off phonics. I do not know have a recommendation for first grade. Mega Words starts at 4th.

I also highly recommend Writing Strands and Easy Grammar once you are ready for composition and grammar.
