We Answered:

I am assuming that the company to whom you want to send the CV is asking that you put it into a Microsoft format, i.e. use either Word or Works. Even if you do not have Microsoft Office on your computer, have you not got Works? If so, you can use the word processor program in there. Wordpad or Notepad would be too basic for doing a CV as you will not be able to use formatting so if, by any chance you don't even have Works and don't want to buy Microsoft, either download the trial version of Office from Microsoft's site or download for free, Open Office 2.2 but make sure when you do your CV you save it in Word format.

Experience on your CV is very important to make you stand out. Applying for internships may be a way forward. Some companies will pay your travel expenses. There are lots of good places to look for them online, go through a search engine.

After reading the previous post I also wanted to add that age isn't necessarily a negative. During your time out of work, you will have developed life experience to handle difficult situations in a mature manner and started hobbies that will look great on your CV.

Oh boy the Tescos interview was a killer a few years back! They asked me loads of unnecessary questions. I was only 16 and they asked me stuff like when was the last time anyone really confided in you?how did you react? What kind of support did you offer this person? Loads of absolute bull. They take you down into the store after the interview and make you either stack a shelf or pack bags to see how you interact with customers. They didnt give me the job but rather this drug user from my school, Im not stupid either, now going on to study a masters in finance! good luck anyhows and have confidence!

A few thoughts on this one.

If an employee is useless, any employer will give you time off work for interviews. If you are 2/3rds performing, then they wouldn't - until now, when there are so many people looking for work, employers can be choosy to the Nth degree. Stick your hand up, and they will probably say you can take the time off, knowing legally it is a sign that you gave self-leaving notice. You should also be aware that employing employers also know the law, so know they can get rid of you on 30days notice in the first 12months - many are working to that agenda at present, seeing new employees as alternate contractors

Anyone who is in a good paying job at present is therefore faced with the option of leaving a paid job under which they have to be given notice; for a long line of interviews and probable rejection in 12months. Personally, now is not the time to leave employment unless you have a gift job lined up on a plate.

If you do decide to move, then always point out in your application that you are employed - will always count for more than being unemployed - and will need to be given fair notice of interviews, possibly best held after work hours or on weekends. Tidy up your online profile, rewrite your CV, and get a new email address and PAYG cellphone which you list as your contact number. All these give you a clean profile, and mean it is less likely your existing employer correlates your profile with you!

However, here's a flip side. If you are so hard working, and have all these slackers around you, then why do you have such a self-confessed unimpressive CV? Work records of hard working people should reflect accomplishment, which should be listed in your CV - but you say yours doesn't. That doesn't correlate to me as a recruiter, and wouldn't if I stuck my HR hat on to interview you for a job. Perhaps that shows why you are finding it so hard to get a another job now when employers can be picky. If you can't correlate the hard work to achievement/accomplishment, then that will create a question in an employers mind; and that means no job offers.

Always measure you job application success. If you are below 1 interview per 10 job applications, then either you are applying for the wrong jobs or have a fatal flaw in your CV. If you are below 1 job offer per 3 interviews, then always ask for feedback to see why you were rejected - it suggests there a gap/question mark between you CV and you in interview
