Examples Of Resume Writing

Edwin Said:

How should I list my server position on a resume?

We Answered:

Even if the position is unrelated to your present work, or the position you are seeking, you should still put it down to show that you have a long history of employment.
In these times, potential employers want someone who is not afraid to WORK, and if you concurrently were a student or in training while working at a restaurant, that shows your determination and hard work.

Servers take orders and fulfill them, work with the public, portray themselves as willing to solve problems (with the menu, special needs, troubleshooting, whatever). Check out the Olive Garden training manual for job descriptions, or online at a chain restaurant's vacant positions section for ideas on how to describe what you did.

If you are doing a chronological lists of positions held, you might want to put non-relevant work in a different font size, or even a diferent font altogether. Make it subtle, though, because you want the reader to gloss over it, not highlight it. Or, something like this:
2007-2008 -- Attended MSU, studied for BS in computer science.
( Employed by Olive Garden part-time as server.)

Good luck, and I hope you get a great job!
