Does it make sense to include a cover letter & resume when getting a job as a table busser?

We Answered:

It's vital to have a good resume, it is worth taking the time to create something that looks really awesome and does the job correctly. The resource in the box below has a lot of information on resumes and guidance with alternative vocations.

Cover Letters?

We Answered:

Hi I'm in HR. Please don't waste time and money. Yes we can usually tell the letters that don't come from you. Worse than that, when you come in for an interview, I can tell that you didn't write the letter if it's not naturally how you communicate. Those companies don't know you and they can't relate what you want to relate. What they are, are good creative writers with English degrees. I'm not looking for a glorious work of writing. You can do this. The cover letter should start out saying where you saw the ad and what the job is and why you think it's a good fit for you. What skills you have that make it right for you. Then the second part should tell me about your background, highlighting things that relate to the job ad if possible, showing you're a good match. The final part should tell me why you want the job and what it would mean for you, a next career step, more responsibility, you know. That's a great letter. You wouldn't believe how many 3 sentence letters I get. Just saying "here is my resume" is a cover letter to some people. In your letter you can also explain anything that you think doesn't look good or isn't explained on your resume, like a career change or job gap. No one can do that as well as you can, and we don't need tons of fancy language to prove that you are articulate, professional, and can think about what to put in a cover letter. I can see that you are, so I think you are fine. Remember that if you aren't getting called for jobs it might have nothing to do with you, so keep trying. The market is tight and you never know what that job is really looking for. Good luck.

Are cover letters and reference sheets required for college admission resume?

We Answered:

No, usually you submit your work and volunteer experience online. Even if you decide to submit it through the mail, you do not need a reference sheet or a cover letter. Do not worry, this is only a college application. They're not looking to hire you, they're looking for students to educate.
