Yes some of the information on the net is out of date, and some of it has probably been censored because it is embarassing to a certain country.

The Badakhshan region has prospered during the war because it's where most of the opium is grown. The narcotics trade has flourished since the American invasion of Afghanistan, despite being much more heavily controlled by the Taliban over the years prior to the invasion. It has been said that restoring a reliable world supply of heroin drugs was one of the real motives for the war, the "war on terror" being just the excuse, as in Iraq where the real motive was of course the oil.
