Writing A Practical Report

Barbara Said:

How do you make a report after doing practical in biology.?

We Answered:

Biology lab reports differ according to specifics but the most basic structure for all is:

Introduction
Materials and Methods
Results
Discussion
Works Cited

Introduction: The purpose of this section is to give background information on the area your experiment investigates. You are generally investigating one major process in your experiment which you should explain as well as factors that will affect it. You also want to state the purpose of conducting the experiment. You should probably back all claims using citations from your sources (this really depends the level of your lab though, I don't know whether this is simply a basic class experiment or whether you're performing college level reports. I'm going to assume it's the former so it's less likely you're going to have to reference everything. )
You should also define all specialised terminology. Also conclude the introduction with your hypotheses.

Materials and Method: The purpose of this is to state the equipment and procedure involved in the experiment. Furthermore, it should be possible for someone else to accurately conduct the same experiment from the information that you describe. You could also include a diagram of the set up of the experiment and materials.

Results: This section should include all the data that was relevant in reaching your experimental conclusion. Present data as tables and graphs and remembering to label clearly everything you present. You probably don't need to include all the raw data, especially if it was a big experiment. The more relevant data information would probably be averages, standard deviations etc.

Discussion: This section is about interpretation of the data and the conclusions that can be drawn from it. You then talk about your hypotheses and whether your results confirm or reject your predictions/hypotheses. You should also evaluate the reliability of the experiment e.g. whether the equipment was adequate for the experiment, what could have been improved etc. If the results were different from what you predicted write about why you think that may have been.

Works cited: This is probably not needed if you're doing a pretty basic lab report but you could just reference any material or sources you might have used.

Ben Said:

how to write a chemistry practical report?

We Answered:

Title--pretty self-explanatory

Abstract/Summary--Usually written in third person, paragraph

summarising what you did in the experiment.

Aim--What you are trying to achieve in the experiment

Hypothesis--An educated guess made by you about what you think is

going to happen in the experiment.

Materials--What tools, instruments etc. you used during the experiment

Method--Numbered steps showing what you did (if you are past high

school you should probably write setting the equipment up)

Results--Write a paragraph illustrating what happened after the

experiment, or draw a diagram/chart/graph (a graphic presentation would give you more marks)

Discussion--

Conclusion--Did you achieve your aim? Should be in 3rd person and

should be VERY short, 1 to 2 sentences MAX.

Acknowledgements and References--Self explanatory once again.

I hope that helps.

Nathaniel Said:

what introduction should i write about in pysiology practical report about venepuncture ?

We Answered:

Start by describing a brief overview of what venepuncture is. State GENERALLY wat its used for. Then explain that there are 2 kinds.
Describe each of the two in a little more detail in separate paragraphs.
All the best

Yvonne Said:

just wanted to ask about a practical report (science)?

We Answered:

While writing the practical, you have to write headings and then under those headings you have to write its contents. Some common headings are:-
1. Aim or Object
2. Materials or Apparatus Required
3. Theory or Principle
4. Procedure or Method
5. Observations
6. Calculations (if needed)
7. Result
8. Precautions

What each section tells your reader

Cover page
identifying information

Synopsis/abstract
main ideas in summary form

Aim and introduction
what you investigated and why

Method
techniques you used

Results
what you found out

Discussion
what the results mean and how they relate to theory

Conclusion
summary of findings related to the aim

Appendix
detailed information referred to in the report

References
source(s) of published information used in the report
