I think a heartfelt letter rarely sounds stupid. Just keep it short and sweet, dont start going on and on. Say thanks, say why you appreciate it, say thanks again, close it out. The personal touch of a thank you letter is a lost art and people will be so surprised and appreciative of your thoughtfiulness that you dont have to worry too much about the content. Dont make it into rocket science.

You actually have two contracts, one with your landlord and one with your roommate. 30 days is required with the landlord and although verbal is sufficient I'd put it in writing and ask the landlord or manager to sign a copy for you. Note that the 30 day notice usually begins in the 1st so you might need to give 59 days notice if you give it on the second. Most people don't consider having a termination agreement when they move in with someone. I assume you're giving your roommate 30 days notice so he/she can choose to move or begin looking for another roommate if he/she needs to. You can't simply disappear one day sticking your roommate with the entire rent even if it's OK with the landlord. In most jurisdictions you would still be responsible for your half of of at least one months rent.

This letter serves as your notice that I intend to vacate the premises known as "address" effective "date" and date and sign it.
