Your professor / teacher will understand that you don't have a book to properly cite. Since you probably won't have the text you want to use memorized, what I suggest you do is paraphrase or summarize the part you need (or in other words, put it your own words). Work into the writing where it comes from.

For example:
Near the middle of Rowling's second the novel, Harry, Ron and Hermione discuss at length their dislike for Draco.

This gives your example and also tells the author, book, and as close to a page number as you can get without the book.

I'm not really sure what you mean by linking verbs, but it is certainly possible to write a good essay without using 'I".

use 'one' instead of I, like, "I look at the evidence and I think...", "If one were to look at the evidence, one might think..." and such things.

A teacher wouldn't give you an assignment that isn't possible.
