Marketing Job Writing Sample?

We Answered:

As a former S.V.P. of Marketing who hired a number of people, I can tell you the type of writing sample is not as important as your style of writing. They are most likely looking for your ability to submit a piece without typos or grammatical errors. They will also look for writing that is clear, brief and easy to read. Depending on the type of job, I would suggest writing something that lends itself to that specific position. If it is a sales type position, write a one-page sales letter. If it's a PR type position, write a one-page press release. Whatever you write, make sure to proof and edit and have someone else look over it for you. The same goes for a resume if you send one. When I was hiring for marketing positions, if someone sent a resume with typos, it immediately went in the "no" pile, as I assumed that's how they would write on the job.

A good way to start is with some sort of graphic organizer or thinking map. Get down on paper everything you know about Selena in single words. Then group your single words to they fit into the categories of "who, what, when, where, why, how". Once you have those groupings, decide what you want to start with--I would suggest "who" because it's going to set the stage for all the rest. For example, "Selena Gomez is a teen pop and rock star. She was born on_________________ in ______________________. Selena is an only child. When she was only seven, _________________,

Believe it or not, the best way to write an essay is to say to yourself, "OK, what happened next?" Write that. Then say, "What happened next?" Write that. And continue in that vein until you have touched on all the main categories (who, what, when...etc.)

If you know what a "hook" is, then once you have written the draft of your essay, go back and read it over, and then think of a great opener--something that really captures the readers interest and attention. (That's a hook.) Review, correct grammatical errors and misspellings, then rewrite. At that point, repost your essay as a separate question, and ask for someone to edit it. If I happen to see it, I will edit it for you; if I don't, there are many others on this site who do a very good job.
