The methods section should have enough detail, so that an educated biologist should be able to repeat what you did. Thus you need to provide the material you worked with (and any sources of the living material), the controls you set up, how you measured time and density of bacteria.... what types of plates did you use, temperature that you used, etc., and any statistical tests you used, if you used such tests.

In scientific writing, it is always best to be as descriptive as possible. Since "Ephemeroptera" is only the order, it is not very specific. You should definitely include the binomial name. Mayfly is also a common name used for many different insects. In addition to the binomial name, I would use a more descriptive common name.

That being said, you would only have to cite the binomial name when you first mention the insect. For example: "In this experiment, the Green Drake (Ephemera danica) was tested..."

Use the past tense in active voice, not passive voice. Passive voice is too tentative. I had to edit my dissertation to change the passive voice to the active voice. After that it was accepted.

The general requirement is past tense and impersonal (i.e. no using words like I, my, me etc.).

Well Jen, if your thinking about any kind of advanced degree you better get used to this-because you going to see this again and again.
Before I was finished I think I wrote 9 or 10. It's is just about the only way to see if a person is capable of independent thinking. I got so frustrated at having to do hell-terms(what they were called in my day) I did one on the history of the comicstrip "Charlie Brown" It got published in our A-grad newsletter and I ended up making a little money on it.

Take it seriously-you will see this again.
