This is a bad situation and one, unfortunately, that I am familiar with first hand. The same thing happened to me years ago: I had a relatively new sports car that I let a friend drive to work, supposedly. I didn't know that he had been drinking and he ended up crashing my car and totaling it out. He called me and told me that he had wrecked it under the influence. Me, being a great friend, a complete idiot or both, told him I'd take the rap b/c he had already had a previous DWI. He thanked me repeatedly and told me he would pay for my transportation and other expenses. I didn't get any substantial reimbursement from him until years later and he was a friend that I valued and I had known for a long time. I certainly hope that your outcome is better than mine. In retrospect (and what I'd advise you to do), I should have had a promissory note drafted and had him sign that; a note like that holds substantial legal credibility and is more likely to be able to be backed by legal means if your friend doesn't honor your agreement. In regards to the details of the accident, remember that you did participate in a crime by not reporting the real details of the actual occurrence to the police and that's probably something you don't want to publicize too much.
