Report Writing Example

Lorraine Said:

Need assistance writing a book report using footnotes?

We Answered:

Through Wiki, not necessarily at their entry, you can take the following steps to get to an updated and thorough look at the MLA ways to do footnotes, through the following link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLA_Handboo…
{If you can't use the MLA style, there is a box at the right at the top of the Wiki entry with blue links (everything in blue is a link at Wiki) to any other style you may need... }
BUT for MLA:
A.) Hit your 'end' key so that you are immediately in "External Links."
B.) There, hit the second blue link down, "Modern Language Association" [through The Owl at Purdue], updated in June of this year.
C.) Once at that source, The Owl at Purdue and the MLA formatting guide, scroll down to "#5. Footnotes and Endnotes."

There you will see many examples of how to do this kind of citation, the footnote, direct from current practice.

Regarding 'in-text' quotes, which means you quote a source in the body of your book report, you can either mention '...as written by John Doe' with the page number in parentheses right after the sentence, like this: (101), or simply put the page number and author in parentheses at the end of your quote, like this: (pg. 101 Doe)...*but* both of these require a bibliography added at the end of your paper for all the info on that author.

Suggest you follow the lettered steps above and not get caught up in anything that confuses you. The Purdue MLA site is very clear and easy-going, so don't worry about anything else.
Best of luck on your report.
