Sensors and Transducers Project Topic HELP!!?!?

We Answered:

>>>but this professor that I have had for this class has done a crappy job teaching so therefore I haven't learned the material needed to fully understand some things.<<<

Are you sure that it isn't because your a crappy student?

>>>"Write a short description of a measurement problem ..... <<<
Instructions seem pretty clear so it will depend upon what you pick for a sensor /control combination.

>>>For example, if you use a torque sensor, is it a strain gage sensor or does it use some other technique?"
<<< The answer is YES. There are different ways to measure torque, either directly or indirectly, it will depends upon the type of sensor you chooses and the mechanism.

>>>Write a short description of a measurement problem, and your solution.<<< Assume you use the example offered the problem is a robot needs to pick up an egg with a claw but keep crushing the egg. A solution is to monitor the torque applied to close the gripper and control it to prevent applying excessive force to the egg.

You can pick just about any property (Temperature, pressure, flow, sound etc...) and if you can adjust it than you can control it. Simplify the problem to something you can understand such as a home heating thermostat. You measure temperature and control it by turning a heater on/off as necessary to control the room temp.

Now apply that understanding to an exotic tropical fish tank which needs to be kept at 78 to 80 degrees or the fish die. If you compare the requirements of the fish tank heater to the capabilities of a standard home heating thermostat you will find the home unit is lacking in accuracy and deviation and dead band capabilities which make it unsuitable for use in this particular fish tank heater application. So you have to create a unit with specifications that can satisfy the requirements of the application.

Here are more examples:

You can measure humidity or dew point in the cabin of a car and use that information to Control the AC and heater to maintain comfort levels OR detect window fogging conditions and take corrective actions to prevent window fogging.

Speed control where you measure RPM and adjust motor speed

Flow control of water being pumped to an oil cooler in a power plant

Boiler combustion controls to control firing rate to maintain steam pressure
Boiler water level controls (1,2 & three element designs)

Solar panel tracker to point panel towards sun to maintain optimum energy harvest.

Solar Hot water heater temp flow control.

With the Muir Russell report out & Phil Jones back at CRU, do any of you regret slandering climate scientists?

We Answered:

The sad thing is that DaveH is probably the most reasonable (least unreasonable?) denier on this site. The fact that the least unreasonable denier was willing to condemn climate scientists as having 'no scientific credibility whatsoever' based on quote mining and misinterpreting stolen emails does not speak well of their movement. Nor does pre-determining that "No judge will fail to find that is both fraud and incitement." In fact dozens of "judges" in several independent inquiries have all found that Jones and the other climate scientists involved committed no wrongdoing, including 'fraud and incitement'.

Of course, we all know deniers are incapable of admitting their constant errors. That's why deniers still make the same long-debunked arguments like solar warming, global warming has stopped, 'they' were predicting global cooling in the '70s, all planets are warming, etc. etc. Deniers couldn't care less about science, facts, or reality. All they care about is maintaining their denial. As the deniers answering this question have already illustrated, they will not accept the findings of these many investigations, because the findings are inconvenient for their denial.

*edit* eric says "When we see overwhelming evidence of improper conduct..."

Funny, I'm still waiting to see any evidence of improper conduct. All I've seen is a few quote mined statements taken out of context from stolen emails, like 'hide the decline' and 'Mike's trick', which we now know the meaning of. It's funny how only deniers see this "overwhelming evidence of improper conduct", and not one single member of these many independent investigations, including a BP employee, saw it.

Good analogy by Earl Grey to the death panels. People who grossly misrepresent the statements of others for their own political gain rarely are willing to admit their mistakes, and if they were capable of feeling regret for this behavior, they probably wouldn't have behaved this way to begin with.

Is Ezekiel Emanuel 'The Angel of Death'?

We Answered:

Ezekiel Emmanuel, as in the NIH guy? I had a very liberal professor who disliked his ethics writings-called him 'the guy who never met a research paradigm he didn't like'-in reference to his tendency to blatantly determine ethical matters by what would be more expedient and cost NIH researchers less, as opposed to moral principles (he doesn't think informed consent for research studies is a big deal). He has basically said very stupid things and made some very whacked-out assumptions to argue that a certain, sketchy type of research that the NIH would benefit from is ethical. Hardly the type of person I would want making allocation decisions.

Suing in small claims court for noise, plus anti-harassment order?

We Answered:

If you don't want a stranger to have access to your medical records, don't file a claim against them in court. Everybody has the right to defend themself in court. If you're going to claim that their noise caused medical expenses for you, expect them to challenge that claim.

Small claims isn't the appropriate venue for this.

What do you think of this analysis of Obama's speeches/interviews?

We Answered:

Obama has made a substantial study of this. He has sought out the best experts in the field and taken lessons. I'm sure that he has studied the best of the best in motivating a crowd. He has learned from Wright, from King, from Hitler, from Kennedy, and from many others.
