For an essay you are usually given a topic to write about. So if you were given a book a your topic, you should write about important characters, themes, allusions, metaphors, motifs, the author's style of writing or their dialect, things of that nature versus a book report which mainly summarizes the book .

Don't try to save ink or paper. Just write. I find that if I write 3 or 4 drafts I finish quicker and have a much more complete and fluid paper. First draft 'free write' just put down your thoughts about where you think the paper should go. Then flesh it out.
