I think a hands on approach is the best way for most students to understand a concept. In this case it means dissection. There are a few students that are so squeamish that they simply can't handle it. Can they learn the concept? Yes but the technique that is effective for most cannot be applied to them. I had a student that made every effort to dissect in class but had such a weak stomach that she had to leave the room. She still learned the material just had to find a different approach.
