How To Write Technical Report
Tom Said:
Help in " Reporting Technical English " ??We Answered:
Lots of scientists frown on this, but personally I think it's fine to use the first person, and I've had papers accepted both ways in the same journal. And if the report is really about what you did (like an internship report, rather than a technical article), it really does make sense to say "I did", etc.If you decide not to use the first person, you usually end up using the passive voice, which I think sounds weaker and harder to understand. "Experiments were set up with the following parameters. The quantities X and Y were observed, leading to the following conclusions." Ick.
