Conclusion

We concluded that unknown substance 16 was a pure substance and that unknown substance 67 was a mixture. Unknown substance 16 had a flash melting point at 75oC which proves that it is a pure substance. Unknown substance 16 also has a density of 1.39 g/mL and after the evaporation experiment the substance had a density of 1.33 g/mL. This shows that the same substance was retrieved after the evaporation experiment. Unknown substance 67 did show some powder from after the evaporation experiment which shows that the distillation experiment will provide two different substances. The powder from unknown 67 had a density of 0.00667 g/mL and the liquid from unknown- 67, after the distillation experiment, had a density of 0.771 g/mL. The original density of unknown 67 is 0.778 g/mL which is different from the two substances after the distillation experiment. We also tried the filtration method on unknown-67 and did not succeed in filtering anything because the particles were too small.
