How To Write A College Book Report

Natalie Said:

Review My Book Report?

We Answered:

I think you did a great job & put the standards on the book report correctly. (:

Leroy Said:

Am I allowed to use copyrighted images from a book in my report if I cite my source?

We Answered:

Like most questions in "Yahoo Answers", it depends on your country, state and jurisdiction. In Australia, such use would be allowed under the "Fair Dealing" for Research or Study as outlined in the "Copyright Act 1968". It would be a harsh jurisdiction which bothered to prosecute a legitimate student who was completing an assignment and not trying to gain financial advantage. Just make sure you cite them properly as you indicated. If in doubt, ask your teacher or local librarian.

I have included a link to a comment on the Australian legislation.

How to write an essay.

What to have:
-Catching title
-Focused thesis(something that you are going to prove/argue.... should have at least 2 elements that you will be proving)
-Introduction
-Conclusion
-Properly use quotes.
-Stay away from summarizing.
-Explain, don't just state.
-Be firm(aggressive in your argument)
-Stay in either past of present tense.
-No slang.
-Comma splices and semi-colon use.

SAMPLE LAYOUT:
Introduction
-Related to topic(Do not introduce title of author yet)
-Introduce title and author.
-Thesis(Strong and precise)

1st body paragraph
-An introductary sentence(A sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph will be about...it should be related to the thesis.)
-Rest of the paragraph needs to elaborate on the topic sentence and NOT move away from it. Using quotes help to add credibility and interest.'
-End the paragraph with a segway sentence that leads the reader to the next topic.

Rest of the Body Paragraphs
-Same as above.

Conclusion
-An introductory sentence that re-states the thesis(Don't copy the thesis.... re-state it)
-End with several sentences that bring closure to your arguement.
-Remember, you are PROVING or ARGUING something... you need to remain firm and not wishy/washy.

Best college-level writing book?

We Answered:

The Little Brown Handbook!!!

I think they are on the 9th edition or something. It is the most valuable thing I own!!!

it says "The Little Brown Handbook is a basic resource that will answer almost any questions you have about writing. Here you can find out how to get ideas, punctuate quotations, search the internet, cite sources, or write a resume. The handbook can help you not only in writing courses but also in other courses and beyond school."

It is extremely well organized and easy to use. You can find the information you need very quickly because of how it is set up. The Elements of Style is good....this is 10000000% better! Good luck
