the worst bit is that you can't smoke or drink during most trials

medical drug trials need to be done, and in most cases vast ammounts of research has been done prior to going to human testing, so theoretically nothing should go wrong, however trials do go wrong, i remember one a few years ago where 6 people died. so yes, you should offer cash to get people to voulenteer, otherwise no-one would bother. Downside of this argument is that you are taking advantage of people in lower socio-economic groups (and students!).
