How To Do Report Writing
Tracey Said:
Report writing question?We Answered:
1. For citations look for the source of the web site. You'll often see 'Associated Press,' 'Reuters,' 'enotes,' 'Britannica,' 'History Channel,' 'Poetry Archives, 'CNN,' etc.2. 'Carets' are the '<' seen before the address of http://www.__ , [the electronic address: how you got there] and after it, this way '>' But without any quotation marks). I just put carets in minimal quotes to make them more obvious.
3. So for a bibliography: Find the author's name, the name of the article you quote, the name of the web site, the date the article you quote was posted, the date you see it, and its url, or electronic address = how you found it. Find as many as you can.
4. If you find nothing (though you should at least have the url, you just put: the author, brief title, Web).
5. If you're using an in-text quotation, the easiest way to cite your source is the include as much info as you have within the quote, this way:
"John Smith, writing "Betting on the Best Nags" in The Racetrack Daily, (<--underline that instead of using quotation marks) as seen on 28 Mar. 2009, says the best horses to bet on are the long-shots who have great jockeys and trainers working with them." (Smith, Betting [<--that's in italics] 31 Racetrack Daily [<--underlined]) <--That is, if you see a page number.
6. If you don't have a page number and there isn't paragraph numbering either (if there is, you'd put (para. 6 Smith, "Betting" Racetrack Daily [<-- all the same as above).
7. If you don't see either page or paragraph numbers or even or a source title, just put the author's name and a short version of the title, this way: (Smith, Betting [<in italics] Web)
8. For no author, use the article title and page number, if there is one. If no page number either, put ("Betting" Web).
Best of luck on your paper.
I'm including a source below, for you to wander through if you like. It's helpful. Will add I also have a degree in Eng. Lit. and made my living as a writer, editor, tutor. Retired.
ADD: At no source do I see the necessity for the use of 'e.g.' -no source at all.
Ben Said:
In NJ how long does a police report stay on file and can I get a copy?We Answered:
For most types of police reports in NJ, record retention is 7 years. Was the person who broke into the house convicted? Records relating to criminal convictions are kept for 99 years.
