Eugene Said:

How do you learn to evoke emotion in creative writing?

We Answered:

I. I know reading fiction isn't really your thing, but it's neccessary to get through creative writing. Get suggestions for reading material from a friend, then dissect that material and try to figure out why it evokes emotion in people who enjoy fiction. The first two chapters of Fahrenheit 451 are excellent for this. Look at it as though it were a machine: you are trying to figure out how it works.
1. Analyze the plot structure
2. Analyze the words used - are they emotional words? What are they describing?
3. Focus on a paragraph that is describing an emotion or emotional situation: read it out load. How do the words flow?

II. Analyze music. (This may be more interesting for you.) What emotion is this song trying to provoke? How does it do that?

III. Be aware of how people act in different situations. What do people's bodies do when feeling different emotions? How do people speak? What do people often think about in different situations?

IV. Learn about logos, ethos, and pathos - comparing and contrasting these will help a lot.
