how do i set up the table of contents when writing a report? We Answered:
Creating a Table of Contents in Microsoft Word:1. Within your document, change the styles of your headings to "Heading 1."
To do this -- place your cursor on the line that has your heading. (No need to select, style will apply the style to the whole line).
In the Style drop down (located to the left of the Font / Font Size boxes on your Formatting toolbar and usually says "Normal") scroll through the style list until you find Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. Select the appropriate heading.
2. When you've done this through your whole document:
On the main menu, choose
Insert > Reference > Index and Tables...
Select the Table of Contents tab.
If the preset settings look ok (usually they're fine for all purposes) Click OK.
The TOC will be placed at the beginning of your document automatically.
