Writing Recommendation Letters

Ralph Said:

I'm looking for a specific humorous book about writing recommendation letters.?

We Answered:

I think I've found the book you're looking for, and it does sound interesting.

Curtis Said:

What should I tell the people writing scholarship recommendation letters for me?

We Answered:

For submitting scholarship applications, I would include only high school awards and any extracurriculars, volunteer programs, etc. that you've been involved with over the last four years. Although the awards you received in elementary and middle school were undoubtedly significant for you at the time, universities want to see what you've been up to as an adult--i.e., during your high school experience. If you include achievements from elementary and middle school, you run the risk of not being taken seriously by application reviewers. Good luck!

Julian Said:

What do I get for a gift for people who are writing my college recommendation letters?

We Answered:

The best gift to all of these people is a handwritten thank-you note. It reminds them that they made the right decision when they marked you were among the top students they have ever taught. If you still feel the need for an additional gift (I am a teacher and we honestly do it because we believe in you), you might do some browsing at a local bookstore, many of which have bargain book sections. Look for something that goes with an interest they have expressed. If they haven't expressed one or you can't remember, overcome your aversion to giftcards. A $10 giftcard to a bookstore is always appreciated and goes much further than a giftcard to almost any other place.

Tanya Said:

Thanking the professors who wrote recommendation letters?

We Answered:

Professors write recommendation letters because they are educators and want to help those that would benefit from a good education. They do not write letters to get praise. But it is good out of selflessness and appreciation to just send a Thank You card to let them know that you did get into the school of your choice, whether their letter helped or not. A gift might just make them uncomfortable.
As an educator I beam with pride for the students that succeed when I know I might have had something to do with it. That is the best gift ever.
Drop them a line, let them know you're success.
