Writing Professional Letters

Ralph Said:

what is the best font for professional letters?

We Answered:

San serif fonts like Ariel or veranda are easiest to read and clearest. I would always go for one these; any workplace which is trying to comply with the disability discrimination act will use them since they are more suitable for people wo have visual impairments.

Jim Said:

Please help me sound professional when writing a letter to the IRS?

We Answered:

You've got a lot more to do.

You need to explain where YOU were living and where the children were living.

If the children were living with you and *not* with your sister, you have to explain how YOU were a dependent and therefore could not claim the children as your own qualifying children. This means you had to have less than $3500 of income and that you didn't support yourself. If you didn't support yourself, what did you live on? Savings? Food stamps?

Once you can't support yoruself, then your sister is potentially eligile to claim them as qualifying relatives (not as qualifying children if she didn't live with them) to get the $3500 exemption only. No EIC. However, she has to show how she provided more than half of each child's support including housing, food, etc. If you got housing assistance, food stamps, welfare, etc, she has to have outspent that.

Get IRS publication 501, page 20 and fill it out. If there is a remote chance your sister is eligible, use the page to do your letter and attach the prove that she spent the money. Your word is simply not good enough.
