do you have a job spec? if so use that a guideline. they usually list what they want under education, skills, experience. stick to that template and explain how you fit their criteria. put their headings in to that way it looks more structured and they can tick off your skills. i recently had to do one and did it that way - got an interview - dont know if i'll get the job, but the cover letter must have looked good at least.
dont simply repeat whats on your CV elaborate upon it.

If it's true, talk about how you've seen her interact with the children, the fact that she has always been reliable, no indication of substance abuse/health problems, and "I would be comfortable entrusting my own children to her care for an extended period."

This is to talk up Grandma, not badmouth the parent/other caregivers.

Note that you can use the "children" line regardless of whether you have any :)

Well, at least in US, misery sells, so pull out any repressed memory, any time you've been wronged, or even make something up and embellish it any time you get the chance. Don't go overboard, naturally, but still.Otherwise just talk about your improvement and how you got there.. They like growth too. Explain what happened, and why and wont happen again. Tell them what you've done to fix it, and why you had problems in the first place. Some honesty would be good there.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a "letter of support". I tried looking it up, and the only thing I could find that looked relevant is the requirement that international students who want to attend a US university are sometimes required to provide a "letter of support" to the financial aid department, but that doesn't seem to be what you're asking.

Only US citizens and US permanent residents (Green Card) are eligible to apply for federal financial aid, using the FAFSA application. Students visiting the US for educational purposes on an F-1 or F-2 visa, or those holding a J-1 or J-2 exchange visitor visa are not eligible for federal assistance. If you're an international student, then, I can't see how you need a letter of support for the FAFSA application.

If this is a request from your financial aid department, I would recommend that you contact them directly for guidance.

I did find this on another page - a sample letter of support for an international student applying to a particular chiropractic college - it might help you.
