Writing A Cover Letter For A Job

Dean Said:

Is alright to mention other possible job opportunities when writing a cover letter?

We Answered:

This is okay but focus on the job you applied for. Including a pitch for "any other job opportunities" would be at best, akward, at worst, hint of desperation.

Try this phrase: If you believe my qualifications don't match your needs for this position, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss other opportunities within your company.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Helen Said:

If I am writing a cover letter for a job and I don't know who the recipient is, how do I start it?

We Answered:

If you do not have the name, it should start either Dear Sir/Madam, and end with Yours faithfully.

I personally would ring up and ask for a name - either whoever is handling the job, a manager, or the name of someone appropriate in their HR department - it shows that you've taken the time to do a little investigative/background work. And at least that way its guarenteed (well as good as) to actually get to someone. Letters that don't have names, don't always make it very far.

Discuss It!
