If you are at uni you should be able to do this yourself. Write the letter with the title of the individual and school etc on the top left. Explain your circumstances briefly and concisely. Specify the times that you need to be absent. close with a statement on why this is so important to you. (keep it short)
Then hand deliver it to the individual that is in charge, and ask them verbally for permission to attend the funeral. The letter is just back up. The face to face is important.

You may need to make some changes like the name of the class. This should work for you and best of luck in your endeavor to getting into the class.

If you are in a university I would hope that you are qualified to write a formal letter. If not, then I weep for the future.
