Just make sure you write it well, use good grammar and spelling, and express your thoughts and questions intelligently. That doesn't mean you need to use lots of huge words--don't do that. Just make sure you express yourself well and use good language.

Also, make sure you address the person as Dr *insert name here*.

its more difficult to write a letter since a letter is more personal. E mails are sort of impersonal and fast.
I'd write to a friend if there were some strains in the relationship that I wanted to clear, or else to celebrate someocassion that means a lot to him or if needed support in a time of need.
I'd rather recieve a phone call from a person I care about.
