How do you write a great cover letter?

We Answered:

Try to avoid a "Dear Sir" generic letter. You can do some advance work that will make your letter stand out.

The first step is to get the name of the person you should be communicating with. (You can ask your parents). Next, call that person to "confirm" that you should direct your resume to him / her. (Don't "name-drop" your parents).

Now you can address your letter to that person, by name. And you can begin your letter with a line like: "As you requested, I am enclosing a copy of my resume for your consideration... etc, etc.) If you had managed to have a more in-depth preliminary conversation about the internship when you called, you can refer to points that were discussed at that time in the body of the letter.

Otherwise, do some research and discuss why you would be a good fit based on what you know about the company. Believe me, they want to see that an applicant has the initiative, skills and interest to do some advance work.

Prepare, prepare, prepare!

Roger Said:

Is it necessary to write a cover letter along with the resume?

We Answered:

Your best bet is to always write a cover letter, even if the position doesn't ask for one explicitly. It's your opportunity to share information about yourself that isn't always possible in a resume. The big question you should always answer in a cover letter is "why are you applying for this job?"

Discuss It!
