Sending a letter across the country?

Given the size and weight of your letter/parcel, and your starting and ending destinations, you can find out the postal rates and the estimated shipping times.

I used 90210 for CA and 48201 for MI, standard business letter (not rigid) envelope at 1 oz., mailed on Sat. Feb. 14 at 2pm. estimated delivery time using standard First Class Mail Letter ($0.42) is 3 days.

Of course, depending on weather, traffic, and your friend's mailbox, you could expect the letter a day earlier/later than that. So, I'd expect 2-4 days.

(For examples of delayed deliveries: My apartment's mailbox is locked on Saturdays because the lobby is only open when the business downstairs is open (weekdays only) and my mailbox is in the lobby, so therefore unreachable for Saturday deliveries... Also, at my mother's home, if there's a snowstorm the mail isn't delivered if she hasn't shoveled out her mailbox such that the mail carrier can reach the mailbox from the mail truck, so sometimes it can be a few days after a storm for her to get mail. Also, if there's a hurricane or similar heavy rainfall, the road to her neighborhood is flooded, and the mail truck cannot deliver for her entire area for a day or two (until the river goes back down and the road is passable). Bad weather may also delay planes or trucks carrying mail cross-country, too.)
