I agree with tech about OpenOffice. There is really no learning curve, and you can save documents as Word files. It is also better in that you can documents as PDF without having Adobe Acrobat. I know the 2007 version can do that now, but Open Office has been able to do it for as long as I have been using it.

Free and excellent is OpenOffice writer. The whole office suite is free and is available for download at http://www.openoffice.org. Try it and I am sure you will love it. It has everything you could possible need in a word processor / Office suite and more. It will certainly work on your Vista machine.

I am sure there will be advice that Microsoft Office is the best, but its all a matter of opinion, personal taste and what each individual is used to. The fact is you pay top price for a product that you can get at least comparable product for free. You don't have to pay high price for good computing products, there are many open source software that are just as good.
