Letter Writing Etiquette

Lester Said:

Email etiquette. How to send a letter of complaint by email?

We Answered:

If you want to make a formal complaint, the correct procedure is to write,
"I am writing to complain.........", then get straight to the point and identify all the facts.
Depending on the nature of the complaint I would advise you to compose the letter on Word (or whatever you use) and attach it to the email, which would then read that you are voicing concerns about.......... and please could you attached letter be brought to thenotice of..........

If you just write it as an email, it could still be confidential but it might give you less opportunity to write things in a calm way and there is some danger of it coming over as a rant. If you have a printer, do keep a hard copy which is easier for you to refer to if you get a phone call in reply, or if you visit the school to discuss your complaint.

What is the proper etiquette on reading a recommendation letter someone wrote for you?

We Answered:

wait a second, if t they wrote your letter and gave it to you, you should definitely read and copy it for your file; they know that by giving it to you, your gonna read it

if theres a waiver that needs to be signed(so that you cant see the letter), they likely wont send it to you anyway

Writing a cover letter. Help?

We Answered:

You are applying online? Skip the cover letter, but when you get the interview, have a copy of your resume' with you, and then after wards, you will have the person's name and you can send a letter to the person thanking them for the interview. It works! Good Luck!

David Said:

Is it proper etiquette to write a thank you letter for a recent promotion?

We Answered:

I've never heard of a thank you letter or note for a promotion. It honestly doesn't sound professional to me. No favor was done, you earned the promotion. At least in theory.

Proper etiquette when writing Christmas letters..what is considered bragging?

We Answered:

The way I look at it is this; you should be providing information, but not going into any kind of detail in the letter. For close family and friends, you'll be able to brag to them later. For example, say something like, "our son Tim had a great year at school. Lots of high marks and his team won the national championship!"

It would be over the top to go "Tim is a straight A student who gets accolades from all his teachers. They think he can make it into Harvard on a scholarship and will be applying there shortly. Also, his team won the national championships thanks to Tim's 4 homeruns and 2 rbi's. His coach thinks he has a chance to play in the major leagues!"

I think the first kind is better. Just let people know what's going on and give them the chance to call for more info or to ask questions on their own. The second kind of letter just makes me want to set a bag of lit poo on your porch.

Etiquette users! I need some help writing a nasty letter to YA! regarding blocked users?

We Answered:

Why the heck are you blocking people? Half the fun is having Y!A stalkers who constantly email you death threats or call you a whore every time you ask a question.

Damn. I wouldn't even be on here if I didn't get to enjoy that sort of thing.

PS...Y!A customer service blows. I wrote them a letter because I got a duplicate VN for the same question (the time stamp on the email was exactly the same for both) and got deducted 20 points. I emailed them and told them I had a duplicate VN and could they please delete the duplicate (I did not contest the actual VN), and all I got back was "After reviewing your question, it was indeed in Violation of TOS, blah blah blah". Obviously, they didn't even read my actual email.

Good luck!
