Letter Writing Course

Samantha Said:

Should I ask a professor, who only taught me one course, to write a letter of recommendation for me?

We Answered:

When asking for recommendation letters, it's better to ask a professor who does know you personally rather than a well known one who didn't know you at all. Recommendation letters are vital because they give a stranger a more in depth and subjective description about you. You would much rather a professor cite specific instances with you rather than write generalities. Now think of how the professor feels, do you think he will be comfortable trying to write something about you if he doesn't remember you?

But all that said, try talking to him first. Then ask.
