You can just write your letter on normal paper. In that case you should write it from left to right in horizontal lines the same way you would write English. This style is very typical in Japan now.

Traditionally, you would write on Japanese composition paper which has lines or in some cases squares about 1 cm on a side which makes it look similar to graph paper. On that type of paper you would start in the upper right hand corner and write in vertical lines. The link is to a pdf file of a blank sheet of this type of paper that you can print out and use if you want to.
