Be sure to ask someone (teacher, employer, head of volunteer organization) that has had direct contact with you and who has been exposed to your work. For example, when I applied to grad school I asked profs. with whom I had a good repore and for whom I had written highly graded papers that were on communications topics. I also asked the general manager at the restaurant where I waited tables (i.e. not the owner with whom I almost never worked). Make sure these people can comment on your character, potential and personality as well as your good grades, involvement, etc. Also, be sure to reference the application materials of the program that you are applying to. For one school I applied to, a reference letter template was provided. If you have to ask someone who doesn't know you very well, i.e. the teacher of a class of 200 people that you got an an A in, be sure to provide samples of work that they graded to jog their memories.

I think it would be best to write from the heart. Let the administrators know how he/she inspired you personally see if you can get others to write a line or two with their names also.
