How To Write English Letters
Jorge Said:
How do you say this kanji/hiragana? And how do you write it with English letters? We Answered:
This is katakana; it is a phonetic alphabet that is used to write words that have been adapted or borrowed from foreign languages.Just like in English we borrow terms like "deja vu" (from french) and "hoi polloi" (from Greek) the Japanese do this as well.
Typically, the word *sounds* somewhat like the original, but the pronunciation is modified to fit the cadence of the Japanese.
This says: "rippa"
(To pronounce it correctly, try using Spanish pronunciation. Remember that the Japanense pronunciation of the "r" requires you to lightly touch the tip of your tongue to the bony ridge behind your upper teeth, almost like the position you take when you say a "d" in English. The Japanese "r" sounds more like a Spanish "r" but is not trilled. Sometimes to an English speaker it sounds like a "L".)
