Any tips on how to write a cover letter?

We Answered:

The way I learned it from my university's career services:

Paragraph 1" How you found the position (website, career service, classified, etc). And introducing who you are (as you can see from my attached resume, I studied xx at uxx)

Par. 2 - Why you want to work there (what is it about that company specifically that you like)

Par 3 - Why they should hire you (how is your experience, personality something they need. What are you going to bring to them that addresses their company needs)

Par 4 - Thank you, and a way to contact you.

How do I write a GENERIC cover letter?

We Answered:

Writing a generic cover letter is the best way to ensure you don't get the job.

At the very, very least you need to address each one separately to the proper person. Try to throw a sentence in there about why you want to work at that specific place. It's always nice if this relates in some way to the statement of purpose or whatever they may have on the website. If you can't write a new cover letter for each one, you can write a basic one and just drop in the name and your single sentence about why you'd like to work at that specific place. The more you can reference your specific skills and experiences in relation to the job and the organization, the better off you'll be.
