Just make it known to your supervisor that you feel that this would be a good opportunity for you to advance your career. Let him know you appreciate your current job and have enjoyed working in his department and this is in no way a reflection of of how you feel about your current position, but a desire to move in a different direction. In other words, blow a little smoke up is "nose", make him feel special, just in case it doesn't work out.

Then basically give him a bit of a synopsis of what you will be giving to HR. Most importantly, use spell check before you finalize your documents. =) Good luck!
