Tiffany Said:

Did I go overboard in my thank you gift to my former boss?

We Answered:

Way overboard. It is not polite to inquire about gifts unless there is a strong possibility that it was lost in transport. They are presented and then forgotten. The proper thing on his part would have been to send a thank-you, but I think you made him uncomfortable with all of the attention. You also shouldn't be seeking acknowledgement the way it seems you are. It's also quite possible you made him feel guilty, because while he's very nice to you, there were probably some things said behind closed doors in the selection process that put you on the chopping block. You may actually have nothing to thank him for.

Your relationship with him should have been purely professional, yet you seem to be trying to generate responses as you would from a friend. Social and business etiquette are different things. Those lines should never be confused or blurred. While you may be very friendly with people you work with, they are not "friends." You're making it all far too personal and seem to be bit clingy.

At this point I would just leave it alone. You may want to have answers and reasons for every little thing, but the desire is not the same as a need. Other than fond memories and anything you may have learned, this chapter of your life should be closed. Perhaps you're feeling a sense of loss since you say you have no friends, and are trying to stall the final curtain as long as possible or keep it from closing all together, but you truthfully need to let it go.

Dean Said:

I'm having trouble thinking of a way to tell my boss I'm switching jobs?

We Answered:

Be objective, and tell your boss that you have found a job that better suite your schedule and it's in an industry which you want to work in. Thank her for the opportunity that she gave you in CVS and that you appreciate everything that you've learned in CVS. Then, the punch line. Say that you'll really appreciate if she can be your reference, and you appreciate very much if she can give you a letter of recommendation and put in a good word for you when your new potential employer call to check for reference.
After you got the job, and before you leave, you should really find out from your current co-workers why they didn't like you. So you don't repeat the same thing with your new job.
A lot of time, relationship is two ways, you have to be open for criticism, and are willing to make change to your personality. Having a good working relationship with coworkers are very important, you spend more time with them than your family members. Getting along with coworkers will increase your job satisfaction, and will open up new opportunities for you in future promotions.
So, be objective, and be willing to change. Good Luck.
