Skyblue is wrong....if you begin a letter with Dear Sir/Madam, you must end it with 'Yours faithfully' (not 'Yours sincerely'). You only use 'Yours sincerely' if you've begun the letter with (eg) Dear Mr Smith or Dear Miss Jones. The rest of his layout is alright.

Dear Pen Pal,

Then write whatever you want to say, here, in the body. Talk about your life and what you do everyday, maybe some information on American customs. Buy some nice quality stationery for your letters. You could spray them with a scent if you wish, though that was something traditionally done for a boyfriend.

Make your letters lively and interesting as if the readers were reading a book by using descriptive language. Check your spelling before sealing the letter. If you have to, type it on your computer and run a spell-check on it before writing it in longhand on your stationery. (You have a misspelling in your question.)

Write you letters as if you were speaking. Letters written like that are more fun to read.

EDIT: Yahoo removed all my paragraph indentations. Obviously you need those. Don't double space your paragraphs, just indent them five spaces or so. I'll double-space on here, now, but in your letter don't.

Also, Yahoo messed up the date and signature. Those should go on the right side toward the middle of the page, not on the left.

I can't believe they don't teach letter writing in school anymore!

I would use the skills you have learned in English (assuming you have taken an English class) and write a formal business letter. I would explain the situation to them including how much it costs you to attend school, how much you are short on paying for school and regular finances, and try to come up with a really good but truthful reason why they should extend your aid. I just did something similar with mine and got approve. You just need to be informative, knowledgable, a good writer, and make a good impression. One of the things I would include would be why it has taken the amount of time to complete your degree (are there special circumstances that did not allow you to complete school within the normal time of financial aid etc).

I would be honest and up front and make the case that you cannot survive without the aid and that you may have to drop school if you don't get it.

The last paragraph should include your appreciation for ,whoever reads it, for accepting your input and judgment on behalf of this individual who you believe would be an asset to the company yada yada yada.
