How To Write A Letter Of Interest For A Job

Marie Said:

I writing a letter of interest for job, what do I put down for a name?

We Answered:

I agree with the first answer. Just call the store and ask the person who picks up the phone the name of the manager. If they ask why, just say I want to send him or her a letter.

Get your grammar- and spell-checker fired up before you start.

I'd always advise against using anyone else's work. You need to show why this job interests you personally, what qualities and experience you can bring to it, and what it is about you as an individual that makes you a perfect fit for this company. An off-the-shelf letter can't do that as well as you can do it yourself. Use your own unique skills and talents to show what you have to offer.

I suggest you make a list of reasons for each of those 3 points I just outlined. Keep the list short, two or three reasons in each category is fine.

Make sure you put the job title at the head of the letter, with any reference number the ad or company might have used, so everybody knows what you're applying for.

Start out by saying something like "This job interests me because.." and add your reasons in the way that seems most natural to you - bullet points or narrative prose.

Then talk about your experience and qualifications, again briefly, but making it clear why they fit the job profile.

Then add a brief paragraph about your individual qualities and ambitions, why you fit the job and what you can add to the company.

Keep it short - one page - and if you need to add a resume for more detail, eg schools, previous jobs or referees, keep that to one page too.

Set it out clearly in decent size type with good margins, so it looks professional. There are formatted layouts in most word processor programmes that you can use to lay out your letter nicely, just choose the one that suits you and the company you're writing to. Use good quality stationery and a clean printer cartridge or typewriter ribbon. (That may seem like stating the obvious but you'd be amazed how many applications I've received that did NOT look professional!)

Just remember that however great the job is, it's the unique qualities you bring to it that will make you shine, and earn money for your company. So use your own skills to write your letter. Where someone else could help you is by reading it to check the grammar, spelling and style after you've written it.

Best of luck!
