maybe you could go back to his old school and ask one of his teachers - it would be a bad idea for you to write it, though, since they'd realise it was biased.

in my opinion, trying to make his out to be a little angel in the letter would be a bad idea, because noone's perfect. so you or someone else could put in something about him being a little mischievious/easily led, ect, but a good kid really.

Recommendations play a larger role in selection than most people think. The scholarship people want to know as much as they can about you, especially from the people who know you best.

My advice would be to have those people who know you best write a general recommendation and just have them edit it slightly for each scholarship. This is done all of the time by teachers/professors. That way, you can get the great recommendations for all of your applications and not overwhelm your recommenders at the same time. Good luck!
