A cover letter is a letter you send with your resume when responding to a job ad you have seen. You put your name and address plus the date at the top right hand corner, then usually the companys name underneath that but to the left.

Start the letter with Dear Sir/Madam or Dear -persons name- (if you know it). You then state which job you are applying for and where you saw it advertised.

Take a new paragraph and then list 6 quallities about yourself that you feel is suitable for the role, plus maybe a bit of past experience. For example this part of my cover letter says...

"I consider myself a hard-working and reliable individual and I am an excellent team player but I am also equally able to work well on my own. I pride myself in having very good people skills as well as being an excellent timekeeper. I possess plenty of retail experience including working as a Sales Assistant in a busy high street fashion store. I am a keen and quick learner and I am always willing to undertake any training available to help further my career."

Thank the person for their time and consideration and then end with yours sincerely (if you know their name) or yours faithfully if you dont know their name. Print your name and sign it also, then post it out in an enevelope along with your resume. Or email it.

Without looking at your cover letter and resume and the jobs you are applying for, it's a bit difficult to give you specific pointers. However, I can say that a good cover letter and resume will often be the key to getting an interview.
