Your only hope is to find backing from a professor to either help you to address the points they'll listen to or to in writing help advocate for you. Without either i wouldn't piss them off, unless your of minority status. You have to find a handle here--start bringing starbucks to teachers with your best smile and sob story. My daughter had great help from an advocate for the bi-polar group there, this guy had 23 students of bi-polar nature that were always mis stepping their courses, he would step in and fix it for them. Look into that and say your vasolating getting treatment for that but you heard you could get course help for problems. Be kinda fast talking and be polite, cause he knows other teachers would recommend you to him, like another student.

Use appropriate language, eg if the letter is professional avoid casual language.
use sequence- write in order of events or time or preferance, any sequence is ok if you stick to it.
If its a causual letter don't just provide information, ask questions as well.

First off... YES YES YES YES YES!! A good query letter helps you stand out from the other 200+ letters an literary agents get a DAY! (Some get over 600!!!) So yeah, definite yes.

Now... first, you need an interesting and good book!! No way a query letter can be interesting if your book is total BLAH! (unless you lie and no one likes that esp literary agents). SO I suggest don't start by just sitting down and writing--have a plot (outline) in your head before you write over 1 page! Starting something and having no idea where it ends or what happens in the middle is no good. Not at all.

Next... grammical errors. If your query is that of a 3rd grader or an F-grade high schooler--no way anyone would read past the first sentence. Grammar. Grammar!! GRAMMAR!! (remember that)

Lastly, the elements for a good query are:

[Name of agent]

[Hook--something that keeps people reading] A quick summary of the book (one sentence) and maybe in another sentence (or the same sentence if you're crafty) tell the word count and genre. If you leave those two elements out, no one will ask for your manuscript because they don't know how long it is or what the genre is.

[Summary of book] PS don't give away the ending of the book. Just think if this part as the-back-of-the-book if it was published.

[Credits] Stuff about if you were previously published (NOT EDUCATION aka a BA degree in literature--no body wants to know that).<< If you haven't been published leave this out.>>

[Your name]
