Formal Business Letters

Christopher Said:

For a formal/professional business letter, how do you attach pages in an envelope?

We Answered:

Hi Ladybug,

Good question. Aways fold together, and never staple or paperclip.

Howard Said:

What is the format for a formal business letter?

We Answered:

Date
(4 spaces)
Name of business
name of person
address
phone number with area code (optional)
(2 spaces)
Dear Name;
(2 spaces)
paragraphs with no indentation, but double spaces between paragraphs
(2 spaces)
Closing, like: Sincerely,
(4 spaces...to give space for hand signing above the typed name)
Your Name
Title (if any, directly under your name)
(2 spaces)
Enclosures (if any, otherwise you won't need to type it)

This is my favorite format. Everything is to the left margin. It was used often when I worked in administration. Your address would be at very top on a letterhead, or if you had a plain paper, it would be first the date, your address, then the business addressing to. Have contact info as well.

Christine Said:

How do you address a formal business letter to a family (father, mother, son & daughter - all adults)?

We Answered:

Dear family member?

Alfredo Said:

When writing a formal business letter and I use sources found on the internet, where would i put the citation?

We Answered:

You would not. You would not use those sources. So, you would not have to cite them. No one you are trying to impress in a business letter is going to take you seriously if you simply quote Wikipedia or someone.

Whatever you are doing, if it is at the level where you need to actually write a formal business letter (and not just e-mail) then you're going to have to go to the library and read the actual original sources yourself.
