The obvious answer is that they are needed as part of business but what a lot of people don't consider is that they probably send a lot more business letters than you think. Most people have email these days which is just another form of letter and quite frequently in a business context.
The reason you need them in business is because any letter you write is usually representing or pertinent to your business interests. That means that the structure and wording that you use are extremely important.
Your business letters will be to influence, inform, request or numerous other things. Using clear wording with little room for misinterpretation, as well as language which is not offensive will make your letter successful.
The rule I always try to follow is Kiss Kick Kiss... Your first paragraph should be a Kiss, nice and friendly even complimentary. The next should be your Kick, make your point and be blunt if you need to. Then Kiss again in the final paragraph, round it out nicely and leave it on a good tone so that your message gets across but no bad feeling is left lingering.
