Advice on writing song lyrics?

We Answered:

If you have a topic or a situation you want to write about, I often find it helpful to write down my ideas around the topic. Here's an example:

Topic: Summer
Now I write a couple of main ideas like: Freedom, Water, Sun and Friends.
Then I write some ideas around each topic like this:
Freedom:
* fly
* Birds
* Happy
* do whatever I want
* free to be me

I hope this helped and good luck with your songwriting! And don't give up even if it's hard to get started, it will get easier after a while.
And the most important thing is to not be to hard on yourself, that will only slow you down : )

Do you write lyrics first when writing a song with lyrics?

We Answered:

Everyone has different views. You can do it in whichever order seems easier to do. I usually write lyrics WHILE thinking of some chords and it fits. One suggestion is:
1. A good song title or music idea.

2. An evoked thought, emotion, situation or memory.

3. A chain of thoughts flowing from the initial idea.

4. The development of the lyrics or music. The careful choice of each song word or note.

5. A revision of the phrasing or order of the music/words, meaning, rhyme and purpose.

6. A good musical/lyrical idea to complement your chosen music or lyrics.

7. The creation of the musical/lyrical idea. Fusing of the lyrics to the music.

8. A complete song.

Can anyone help me with writing song lyrics?

We Answered:

Well I'm not a pro at all haha but I like the process of creativity. I write a lot of lyrics. My advice:

If you're feeling an emotion, any emotion, even if you're feeling bored, grab a pen, write a little, get the blood flowing to your brain.
One thing I always do is to write anything that I want - a narrative story, lyrics, other people's quotes etc, build on from it, it may look like you're just writing rubbish, but sift through it and you'll find many awesome ideas.
Also flip a dictionary to a random page. A random word, and use that word as a word you have to rhyme on the next line. It can be really fun :)

All in all don't push yourself. Listen to all sorts of things, have fun with it. Good luck!! :D

What are the most IMPORTANT aspects of writing song LYRICS?

We Answered:

It depends really, if you want to write plain black and white lyrics with which everyone can relate and understand: write a love song. When I write lyrics I like to fill them with obscurity and metaphoric symbolism, and I do so in the hope that one day I will have the chance to share it with an audience - regardless of size - the majority of which, will inevitably disregard the meaning woven in so carefully, however the idea that even a handful of listeners will take the time to think about each individual line, cracking the riddle slowly but surely, exposing the thoughts and feelings, ideas and observations that I so carefully concealed beneath it all. The effort taken will be remembered by the listener, and he/she will remember the words for much longer than they would have if it'd all been printed plainly for them to see with but a scan of their eyes. Remember: words with meaning last longer than gimmicks. And an overall package - a good tune, meaningful lyrics... result in fantastic songs, and fantastic songs last longer than people. It's more than just an art, it's a legacy, so don't leave something gimmicky devoid of any kind of meaning or sentiment.

Peace.

How could I improve on writing song lyrics?

We Answered:

Just jot some ideas down. Like, some topics, good sayings you'd say or go by, or just something meaningful. Depends on what kind of music you are writing. Try to look at the lyrics of you're favorite artists and try to see what they're writing or talking about. Like, try to figure out what their topic was. For instance, the band Attack Attack! has a new album. Most of their lyrics is portrayed to their original vocalist who they think was a bad guy. If you do read them, it does seem like they're definitely talking about somebody, probably they're ex-vocalist. Or the band Of Mice & Men. Their song, "Second & Sebring" is about the vocalist mother. Although, these two bands don't really like, bluntly make their lyrics plain and boring and make them obvious telling the listeners that this is their topic. Some bands can pull it off because they know what they're doing. Pretty much, they encrypt their message/topic into their lyrics.

Just come up with a topic and let the words flow.

Discuss It!
