It opens MS word documents too.
If you can, get the openoffice suite, it does everything that MS Suite does, like excel etc.. All free.

Try Open Office (If you have a Mac, use NeoOffice - it's the same thing with the Mac GUI). It's free and open source and has a word processor called Write that's very nice. It can read from and save to MS Word format, so there are no worries about compatibility. There are also a lot of nice, free add-ons for things like creating .epub documents, saving as PDF and other handy features.
