Is anybody but me getting sick of Political Correctness? In the 1950s and 60s, it was considered a suicidal act to refer to a person as "black". The correct word was "N--ro", which has long since fallen out of favor. Now the word "black" seems to be going the same way
The year 1957 was the first time that I heard Harry Belafonte singing. In my opinion, he did more for race relations than the combined efforts of the next top ten people. Soon after his arrival, there were "Black is beautiful" signs all over the place. ( Most of you will have to ask your parents or grandparents about that.) There were encouraging signs of black pride emerging. Suddenly, there were millions of Jamaicans in the US that nobody had ever noticed before, while the population of "Portuguese" dropped accordingly.
Sly and the Family Stone soon began singing about people. Race relations were probably about the best they have ever been. It saddens me to see how that has deteriorated so badly in the past few years.
Sorry about going off on a tangent, but I had to get this off my chest.

I'm a big fan of the witty aside in academic papers. It's risky, but every professor I've had has made a point of letting me know how much they've enjoyed reading my papers. As long as it's technically well written, I think you should go ahead with the intellectual humor. Professors are surprisingly receptive to it.
