Writing A Speech

Tim Said:

When writing a speech (for my english coursework), are we supposed to use long, sophisticated words?

We Answered:

There are times when a sophisticated word is better than lots of phrases that describe what you mean. You shouldn't use sophisticated words just to show off, but when you can sum up a lot of words by using one sophisticated word, that makes you a more direct kind of person and therefore more trustworthy.
Consider you are at an important dinner party and you must give a speech before dinner...
Would people prefer you to use lots of words to describe one event, or if one word would sum it up, would they prefer that?
But use Sophisticated words wisely. Make sure that the people you are talking to know the words you are using. You wouldn't say things like I'm in awe to a kindergarten child because you would just get a blank look. But you wouldnt say "Crap" at a presidential election contest because it makes you look stupid!
I hope this helps.

Writing speech for scholarship Water: will california be left high and dry?

We Answered:

good question.

i think parts of california are more prone to water shortages than others. the sierras melt a good deal of snow each year- that probably is routed to aqueducts which flow throughout the central valley.

The Colorado river water flowing out of Lake Meade in Nevada is hurting more and more each year, but I think that's more of a threat to Pheonix and Vegas.

Here's a good angle:

If global warming increases the desertification of the already arid regions of California, then natural reservoirs and ground water supplies will become insufficient for the current water demands.

so appropriate actions might be:

1. lessen the demand for water (water efficient shower-heads and toilets, compost toilets, drip-line irrigation, stop car washes, etc.)
2. import water (washington sure gets alot of rain, maybe they'd trade water for batteries charged by california's solar-panel farms)
3. hope for tech breakthroughs (coastal fog catchers, ocean-water desalinizers, waste water recycleries)
4. DIY tech (rain water catchers built in to people's downspouts, compost retains water better than lifeless silt or sand)
